The Dord of Darien

Musings from the Mayor of the Internet

Hey, did you know

That if you go here to the 2010 free agent class, and you look at the list of free agent pitchers — which are sorted by career WAR — the very top name on the list is a relief pitcher? That seems odd to me.

By which I mean: holy shit that guy’s good.

  1. Why is the WAR pop-up text so confusing? It says 8+ = EM VEE PEE. Then I look and there’s 40 year old Jim Thome with a 70.3 WAR. Wait, what? If 8+ == MVP, 70.3 must be the most godlike thing ever, right?

So of the 94 wins the Twinkies got last year, Jim was good for 70 of them? Who knew!

  2. That’s career WAR. Thome’s been playing for 20 years, and he’s accumulated 70.3 WAR over that span. Here you’ll see it broken down by year. He was worth 3.5 in 2010, which is really really good for 340 PA.
