Jim Tracy on Ubaldo Jimenez’s no-hitter

Because it’s only his third start of the season, I start looking at the (pitch count). Is the pitch count intact enough to the point it doesn’t become ridiculous and you run the risk of jeopardizing a young man’s career?

For this, Jim Tracy, you may choose any one of the nasty things I’ve said about you and I’ll take it back. It’s a little bit jumbled, but it’s clear what you’re saying: even given what Jimenez was doing, you were still paying attention to his workload and thinking about the bigger picture. That is surprisingly non-blinkered. Also, you made the right decision and let him finish it out. Good work, James!

Now stop having Tulowitzki bunt.

Somewhere, Joe West is screaming

So, just to please everybody who’s jumping on the Red-Sox-and-Yankees-take-too-long-to-play bandwagon, the Mets and Fatinals today played for seven goddamn hours, a game the Mets eventually won when the Fatinals ran out of pitchers first and put in a position player in the 19th. In response, the Mets — who were also out of pitchers — put in one of their other starters. Penny-wise and pound-foolish? Perhaps! But the Mets won and the Fatinals didn’t, so it’s all good as far as I’m concerned.

Congratulations to Joe Mather for being the first position player to pick up a loss this season. Also, congratulations to Johan Satana for pitching seven innings of shutout ball and not getting a win for it — K-rod gave up the tying run in the 19th, which means, for some reason, he gets the win instead of Santana. Somebody needs to explain to me why a dude who got three outs and gave up a run should get credit for a win while the dude who got twenty-one outs and didn’t give up a goddamn thing misses out. Alternatively, how about we just agree to get rid of fucking wins?

Also, congratulations to Ubaldo Jimenez, who pitched the first no-hitter of the season, and also the first in Rockies history. Big stuff going on here today.
