The Dord of Darien

Musings from the Mayor of the Internet

Our prices are insane!

I have exactly one thing to say about this. And that thing is: Fuck the heck?

  1. That is… I’m not sure it’s worth it even with the feelies (smellies?) and strat guide.

But since some people are willing to pay it, perhaps that might be a clue for the people with the rights to move the status of a Mother trilogy for the DS from “not entirely out-of-the-question” [citation needed] to an actual project. I’d buy it.

(Said the guy who recently bought an XBox 360 basically for Eternal Sonata.)

  2. There are massive rights issues with the series (Mother 2 in particular) that are part of what’s holding it back; it’s not just the market concern. Also there’s the what-to-do-about-Mother-3 issue, since it’s probably unreleasable in North America as-is with any rating lower than M, and there’s no way they’ll sell it with that rating.

  3. Oh, and what did you think of Eternal Sonata? I recall talking with Stephen about it years ago; it seems really interesting to me. Does it play well?

  4. Well, I like it, but that’s not saying a whole lot. So I’ll just describe it.

I will say that I’m only partway through it, so it may be that it actually gets bad near the end, but it hasn’t done so for me yet.

There are some oddities to consider, though. It has the rats in the sewers, but you’re not after a key, at least. And the sewers are the prettiest sewers I’ve ever seen. Of course, a lot of the scenery is really pretty no matter where you are.

There are definitely cutscenes, and that shouldn’t be a surprise, but there are four right at the beginning, so if you don’t skip them, which you can, you’re waiting 17 minutes from the time you start a new game to the time you get to control a character. And not a lot of them are of the “Uh oh, here’s something you have to deal with RIGHT NOW” type. I do recommend that you watch the cutscenes at least once, and after that, whatever.

And somebody has a really odd idea of where to put credits. You have to beat the first boss, and they come up after some cutscenes play. I don’t know, most of the video games I know save them for the end or let you access them from the menu or something. Giving you credits that early in a game is not really what I’m used to.

On a sort-of related note, one thing that’ll occur at different points in the plot is a series of mini-documentaries on some of Chopin’s works, text only, superimposed on presumably-related images, with the piece in question as the background music. Definitely not anticipated. And once you’ve seen it, you can go back and read the text.

Another mildly-interesting part is the score pieces. As you travel through the world, you’ll quite possibly find score pieces. Additionally, you’ll also find people who want to play sessions with you. You’ll get to see their piece, and your pieces, and you select one of yours to play. It kind of reminds me of the Kinstone Fusion thing from Minish Cap, only… well, each combination is ranked, and past a certain rank gets you items, the higher the better. You don’t lose used score pieces in the process, and you can play multiple sessions with the same character. (You don’t get anything the second time you combine each score with each NPC’s score.)

Oh, and hey, when you get to the Chorus Plains, see if you don’t think the Earth Mover creature looks like it was made in Spore. :)

  5. 17 Minutes? That’s it? Hell, I’ve sat through cutscenes in Xenosaga that are a good deal longer than that, and they’re not even the intro.

  6. Eh, I haven’t timed the rest, so who knows.
